Reveal of first new Myst game in years confirms it's already been canceled, devs say they're "hard at work on other new Myst universe things"

The developers of Myst and Riven have just released an awesome trailer for a game that finally returns to the universe of their stone cold PC classics, but don't get too excited, as Cyan Worlds canceled this one a year ago for unknown reasons. Cyan Worlds has been pumping out interesting, first-person adventure games and freaky mysteries for literal decades now. That work was supposed to continue in Project Anglerfish, a previously unannounced game that was quietly in production at the studio last year before it got scrapped just as quietly. A new trailer now gives us a glimpse of what could've been, otherworldly books and all - take a look below. https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/ZvNGt02yZNc First-person exploration through twisty-turvy buildings? A book that seemingly flings readers into whole other worlds? Gorgeous graphics, even on a rough build? Sure seems like a new Myst game, alright. "Over a year ago, the team here at Cyan spent about four months building a prototype for a new game in the Myst universe, codenamed 'Project Anglerfish,'" the trailer's description reads. "The prototype (and this teaser trailer made for it) were purpose-built for publisher-eyes only. For a variety of reasons, this project couldn't move forward at the time, but we're still proud of the work the team did – so we're sharing the teaser for the prototype with you all now." Project Anglerfish would've been the first brand-new Myst game in ages - not counting the trove of remakes, remasters, and re-re-releases - though it doesn't sound like we'll need to wait too long for more games in its world. "Don't worry, we're still hard at work on other new Myst universe things," the dev adds. "More on that to come." Cyan Worlds is one of the longest-surviving independent game makers in the world, having been founded almost 40 years ago. Way back when, the developer made a name for itself with the engrossingly lonely and mysterious Myst, which eventually became the best-selling PC game of its time and one of the most hotly debated games around. The years since haven't been quite as kind to the influential studio, as Cyan let go of around half of its staff last year . Cyan Worlds did just port its gorgeous Myst and Riven remakes to PS5, PSVR2, and Xbox Series X|S earlier this summer, however. While we wait to hear about these other Myst universe projects, check out the new games of 2026 and beyond.

Stalker 2's Huge Free 2.0 Update and Its First Major Story Expansion Have a Joint Release Date

Stalker 2 not only has a release date for its first major story expansion, but its huge free 2.0 update. Ukraine developer GSC Game World announced that Stalker 2: Cost of Hope is set for PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5 on August 20, 2026. Here’s the official blurb: The longstanding conflict between the Zone’s leading factions — Duty and Freedom — takes a dramatic turn. As tensions rise and the fragile peace between them begins to unravel, the fate of the Zone hangs in the balance. In Cost of Hope, players once again step into the role of Stalker 2 protagonist Skif — as a mysterious PDA signal draws him into events unfolding alongside the main game’s story. GSC Game World has said to expect dozens of hours of content. The 2.0 update, meanwhile, upgrades the game to a new version of Unreal Engine 5 (from 5.1 to 5.5.4). This brings new content and improvements, GSC Game World promised. Admittedly, that’s not a lot to go on, but the developer promised to deliver more information soon. After a series of understandable delays, Stalker 2 launched on PC and Xbox Series X and S in November 2024, as well as on Game Pass. It was released on PlayStation 5 a year later, in November 2025. Stalker 2 was a sales success, hitting 1 million copies in two days. It has so far surpassed 6 million players. Wesley is Director, News at IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Quietly Improves Hated Feature

Ubisoft has quietly released an update for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced that, in some instances, removes one of the most hated features of any Assassin's Creed game in recent years. Of course, this is mostly a visual thing, so fans shouldn't expect any major changes to gameplay in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced until Ubisoft releases any major updates for it.

Bloodborne Officially Returns January 2027

Final Fantasy 13's Lightning Officially Returns on October 22

Final Fantasy 13 is probably one of the most divisive subseries in the franchise, with the game still receiving three total mainline games in FF13, FF13-2 , and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 despite fan concerns, and protagonist Lightning is now set to return on October 22. Fans could throw a dart at a board and find an aspect that didn't gel with lots of folks, from the extreme linearity to its combat system and storytelling, but the same could be said of things that did gel with folks. Final Fantasy 13 's Lightning , for example, remains a popular protagonist in the franchise.

Steam indie hit Meccha Chameleon made more money than any other PC game last month apart from Fortnite, according to new data

Indie hide and seek hit Meccha Chameleon was apparently the second-highest-grossing PC game of June, just behind Fortnite. Going viral is the best thing that can happen to an indie game. We've seen it happen a number of times now with the likes of Peak, Among Us, R.E.P.O, and Lethal Company, and the result is smaller titles absolutely popping off. Meccha Chameleon is easily 2026's biggest contender in this category, with the viral hit that takes classic hide-and-seek game modes to the next level selling 7 million copies in its first two weeks , before going on to sell 15 million copies within its first month , making it not only the fastest-selling game of 2026, but also the best-selling game of the year. If it keeps that momentum up, it stands a good shot of holding that title… until GTA 6 releases, but no one's taking that one on. Unsurprisingly, with sales like that, the game has made a good chunk of money. According to games industry data firm Newzoo (via Gamesindustry ), Meccha Chameleon was the second-biggest PC game of June 2026 in terms of revenue, just behind Fortnite. Given that the game is $5.99 (which isn't even enough to get you the lowest bundle of V-Bucks), it's quite the impressive figure. Despite how overwhelming it is, Fortnite actually came third in May, but with the launch of Chapter 7 Season 3, it bounced back up to the top. May's top game, Forza Horizon 6, dropped five spots after the launch wave. Aside from Meccha Chameleon, Marvel Rivals, The Sims 4, and Dead By Daylight were the other new faces in the monthly top 10, with Dead By Daylight jumping 16 spaces thanks to its 10th anniversary celebrations. Earlier this month, Meccha Chameleon's popularity spawned the inevitable result of any Steam popoff: a fast-follow AI ripoff that even uses the same name in some regions. Of course, in typical Roblox being the worst fashion, clones of the game on there are actually outdoing the original in terms of playercount.

Critics of Sony's Decision to Kill Physical Discs Call on Gamers to Boycott PlayStation for a Week Next Month, but Will Anyone Listen?

Backers of physical media have called on gamers to boycott PlayStation for a week in August to send a message to Sony that its decision to kill discs from 2028 is unacceptable. The Does it play? X / Twitter account , which is a fierce critic of Sony’s plan to do away with PlayStation game discs, issued a call to arms that has been viewed on the social media platform nearly 1 million times. “Sony wants to abandon fans? Let's give them a small taste of their own medicine!” the Twitter account said. “Together with other creators we call for a 1 week #PSBlackout in August. No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony's platforms.” Sony’s rationale for ditching discs is that it’s simply following consumer trends. “In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only,” Sid Shuman, Senior Director, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said in a post on PlayStation Blog . “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today." Reinforcing this trend, Mat Piscatella, Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana, said that just seven PlayStation video games had sold more than 100,000 physical units so far this year in the U.S. . Only two PlayStation video games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the U.S. during the week ending July 11. However, since the announcement, gamers have called on Sony to U-turn on its decision, signing online petitions and swarming over PlayStation social media posts to express concern about video game preservation and ownership — even overshadowing the release of new games that have nothing to do with what’s going on at Sony. Complaints have also come from other groups. The UK’s Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA) called Sony’s decision “a triumph of corporate convenience over consumer choice.” In a statement published online , Kim Bayley, CEO of ERA, said its data shows that 25% of under 25s use discs for gaming, and that discs should remain as a choice on top of digital. “Every year, millions of gamers still choose to buy physical copies because they value true ownership. A disc can be shared with family, traded in, collected, preserved and, crucially, still played years from now. A download licence often offers none of those freedoms,” Bayley said. Does it play? and other critics of Sony have remained determined to continue the fight. Here’s the boycott statement in full: For several years now, Sony Interactive Entertainment has continued to grow further apart from its fan base. Whether it's closing beloved studios like Bluepoint, pursuing a misguided live-service strategy, canceling fan events, leaving PS VR2 to die, or being completely out of touch with the franchises players want to see return, PlayStation has never felt more disconnected from its community. Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw. We understand there is only so much SIE can control, but with the decisions that are within its control, the company continues to mismanage the strong position it inherited from the PS4 era. There are so many issues with PlayStation right now that bringing back physical games would only be meeting players halfway. There is still much more SIE can do. We miss Twisted Metal, SOCOM, Sly Cooper, and Resistance. We miss PlayStation Experience. We miss Japan Studio. With that, we are calling on PlayStation players to participate in an economic and gameplay blackout from Sunday, August 23, at 7:00 PM local time through Sunday, August 30, at 7:00 PM local time. Players can participate by turning off their consoles or logging out for seven days. We feel that this period gives publishers and developers minimal impact while still giving players a voice. If history has told us anything, it’s that video game boycotts rarely result in the action they desire. It probably doesn’t help that Metal Gear Solid 4 will finally escape PS3 prison via Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 that week. There are of course instances of companies reversing decisions amid a backlash, but, analysts have told IGN , it remains unlikely that Sony will U-turn on this. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japanese game industry consultancy firm Kantan Games, suggested that even if half a million people cancelled their PlayStation Plus subscription in protest, it would be just a drop in the ocean for Sony. "I sympathize with physical media fans, but Sony will not reverse this decision," Toto told IGN. "They of course knew what the online reaction would look like, and they now wait for this storm to pass. "Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users," he continued. "Around 50 million people subscribe to PlayStation Plus. As a thought experiment, let's say 500,000 cancel in protest, that would be just 1% of that business gone — of course not enough for Sony to start rethinking. Digital is just too lucrative." Piers Harding-Rolls, games industry analyst at Ampere, has said a lot has changed over the course of the last two generations. "Console gaming is the last hold-out for physical media in the gaming sector, but physical product has been declining in importance," he said in a post on the Ampere website . "Back in 2013 when the PS4 launched, Ampere data shows that only 13% of total full games unit sales for Sony consoles were digital (including digital-only games). Fast forward to 2025, and this digital share of full game purchases stood at almost 80% of the total. "Inevitably there will be concerns from PlayStation gamers around various aspects of this announcement including choice, accessing older physical games on new consoles, the ability to collect physical games, and game preservation, however the purchasing trends of gamers are clear." One analyst said fans of physical media had their chance and blew it, so there’s no going back. “If gamers and preservationists had bought more physical games, Sony wouldn’t have seen the digital sales ratios that justify this decision,” Robin Zhu, a games analyst at Bernstein, told the Financial Times . For Sony, going all-digital for new game releases will earn it more money from every sale at a time when console sales are expected to plummet due to their rising cost. For a first-party PlayStation game such as The Last of Us, Sony will only keep around 65% of the money from a physical copy, with around 30% going to the retailer and roughly another 5% on manufacturing costs. Meanwhile, for a physical copy of a third-party game such as the Activision-published Call of Duty, Sony will get a licensing fee, likely around 15%. For downloads, however, the margins are much higher. For a first-party game sold via Sony's own PlayStation Store, the company obviously keeps 100% of the revenue. For third-party games such as Call of Duty, meanwhile, Sony keeps a 30% cut (so, roughly $21 for a $70 game). Photo by Nikos Pekiaridis/NurPhoto via Getty Images. Wesley is Director, News at IGN. Now Xbox Is Down for Some, Microsoft Says It's Working to Fix a Major Outage Affecting Library, Sign-In, and Game Launch

If you’re having trouble with logging into Xbox, you’re not alone: it’s suffering a major outage that’s affecting account and profile sign-in, viewing games on the store, and playing games. In a post on social media , Microsoft acknowledged the issue, which began earlier today, July 27, and said its teams were working on it. “Just checking in on the game library, sign-in, and game launch issue,” reads a tweet issued just before 1pm UK time. “We know this has been going on a while and appreciate your patience while our teams keep working on it.” Microsoft will want to sort this outage out sooner rather than later, with Halo: Campaign Evolved set to launch proper on July 28 after three days of early access for Premium Edition owners. The Xbox outage comes less than a week after Sony’s PlayStation Network went down in similar fashion . The timing couldn’t have been worse for Sony, which is operating amid a backlash to its decision to kill physical discs for new PlayStation games in 2028. Critics said not being able to play some owned games because of online services going down was yet another reason why an all-digital future is unwelcome. Indeed, gamers are planning a week-long boycott of PlayStation next month in protest. While Microsoft has yet to make any announcement about video game disc production for Xbox, it is reportedly set to release the next-gen Xbox without a disc drive , suggesting a similar long-term plan for its gaming business. "You may have problems playing disc-based games right now," Microsoft's Xbox support website reads. Microsoft’s Xbox support page currently lists a resolution for the current issues as “pending.” Hopefully they will be resolved soon. We'll keep an eye out an update this story with any further developments. Wesley is Director, News at IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is a highly lethal FPS that is purpose-built to humble Battlefield players

Nothing humbles a fan of first-person shooters faster than a hardcore Mil-Sim like Hell Let Loose: Vietnam. Picture it. You're creeping under cover of the jungle canopy as helicopters whir overhead. Short sharp shocks of gunfire are your only real guide towards a forming frontline; squad orders are the other, as the voice of a squadron Commander crackles over the comms line to scramble Infantry units back through dense brush to reform fracturing formations. As enemies pour over the crest of a distant hill, your M16 rumbles as bodies crumble. And then, nothing. A bullet fired from an unknown location rips through your torso. Medics in the area ignore your pleas for help. The long walk back to the action begins again. There was a time in my life where military simulation games were all I would play. Highly lethal gunplay meets minimal visibility and low hit detection across large open terrains? Count me in! The Operation Flashpoint and ARMA series were where I graduated to after growing a little tired of the more predictable cycles of Battlefield, Ghost Recon, and SOCOM. After a weekend of getting my ass kicked, I'm struggling to remember what attracted me to the brutality to begin with. Run Through the Jungle (Image credit: Team17) My friend group has started to migrate away from Battlefield 6, which has left me looking for a new shooter to play – ideally one that isn't of the Battle or Extraction persuasion. The Battlefield Studios effort really made me fall back in love with the idea of larger-scale, open-combat experiences so Hell Let Loose: Vietnam appealed. Here's the thing, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is an experience defined by the friction it generates. With 100 players populating exceptionally wide multiplayer arenas, the game is designed around dynamic frontlines and intense team communications. Every soldier has a role to play, and players buying into the fantasy of their assigned Command, Support, Infantry, or Specialized unit is the only way for such an unforgiving shooter to function appropriately. Let's take respawning as an example of this game theory put into action. Despite being so focused on team dynamics, you are not able to spawn directly on squadmates in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam. Instead, you're able to dive back into the fray from a Garrison, created in tandem between Commanders and Specialists, or from an Outpost placed by a Squad Leader near objective points. If these fail to be established then you're forced to spawn far from the frontlines, back at a headquarters where you'll face a 10 minute walk back to any action. Once you return, you're as likely to get nailed from an unseen attacker as you are to establish a chokepoint to catch enemy soldiers pouring from trenches. (Image credit: Team17) With this in mind, setting up Outposts or fortifying capture points to allow for faster redeployments into the fray is just as valuable – if not more so – than generating an unholy amount of kills and assists. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam reflects that in its unstable firing models, lack of discernible weapon feedback, and any real visual hit detection. The objective is to win the day as a group, not sit atop the leaderboard as an individual – killing enemy soldiers is simply a means to this end. Whether this sounds even remotely appealing to you will determine whether Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is something you will enjoy. When it clicks, as 50 players come together to generate battlefield momentum, it's fairly spectacular – intense and rapid, capturing a tangible sense of large-scale action that Battlefield can only dream of delivering. When a round doesn't come together, it's a mess. A slow slog through open expanses where you're left to lament the shift in online gaming culture; wide adoption of microphones (at least on console) seems like a relic of a distant past, which is a problem for a multiplayer game foundationally built around quick-fire collaboration. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is a polished FPS with a well-defined identity, one which easily separates it from Battlefield, Call of Duty, and the waves of battle royale and extraction shooters dominating the charts. It's a challenging, uncompromising experience that isn't going to be for everybody. The brutality isn't a bug, it's a feature – the great differentiator that gives developer Expression Games a lane to dominate. I don't know that I necessarily have the patience for this sort of Mil-Sim any more but, then again, I still find myself eyeing the August 13 release date with an almost morbid curiosity. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X on August 13. If you're looking for more on new games of 2026 and other recent shooters, here's some reads I recommend for you next: Doom: The Dark Ages' DLC is a true FPS triumph, and its developers deserve better Halo: Campaign Evolved review: "An FPS in its purest form, but also a wasted opportunity for Halo Studios to put its own spin on a classic" Warframe lead Rebecca Ford says Destiny 2's death is "horrible news" for everyone: "Not the first time it's happened, and it'll happen again"

Stalker 2's engine upgrade and first story expansion are due out in August

The week I spent in Chornobyl in Stalker 2's pre-release review period is a demented blur in my memory at this point.
