Arc Raiders makes it official: "Only the PvP fights players choose to initiate" will impact your aggression rating for matchmaking

You simply will not believe this: Arc Raiders is messing with the matchmaking again. In its latest update, developer Embark Studios says it's reinforcing a previous change that received positive feedback from players, and this time, it's spelling it out loud and clear. "The matchmaking changes follow on from earlier matchmaking improvements made on May 20, which reduced the matchmaking impact of defensive actions," Embark explains . That May update made it clear that "defending yourself is no longer treated the same as starting a fight" in terms of your behavior tracking. Embark finally, properly pulled back the curtain on the matchmaking algorithm in that same update, explaining just how Arc Raiders uses PvP aggression to group like-minded players. Today, the studio says it's going even further. "Following positive player feedback on those earlier adjustments, this will now be extended so that only the PvP fights players choose to initiate will impact their playstyle estimate, while defensive actions will have no influence at all on playstyle estimate," Embark explains. "The team will continue to collect and monitor player feedback throughout the trial period. More information, including a player survey to share feedback, can be found in the patch notes here." Every day, we inch closer to an Arc Raiders PvE mode – which is technically already available in the Chinese branch of the game. Just last week, Embark revealed yet another change in a similar vein. The idea with that experiment was to better optimize matchmaking for playstyle and team size, meaning friendly players would be more likely to find each other, and duos would be less likely to run into trios. "When Arc Raiders was at its peak," Embark was burning 30 terabytes of data per day tracking every single bullet fired: "We want to know who shot first."

Dungeons & Dragons Is Getting Its Biggest Crossover Ever

Dungeons & Dragons is certainly no stranger to crossovers and collaborations, as Wizards of the Coast have worked with numerous other IP and studios to craft tailor-made books for other iconic worlds. It makes sense considering D&D's robust ruleset translates rather well to similarly themed settings and can be adjusted accordingly for when it doesn't quite fit. Naturally, fans are constantly curious about what the next crossover event may be for D&D , a question that has become ever prevalent in recent years.

Sintopia gets first major post-launch update with ‘Imployee Retention’

Piraknights Games and Team17 have released the first major post-launch update for Sintopia, the studio’s hell-themed management simulator, adding a new facility, additional tools, and quality-of-life improvements for players. In Sintopia, players take on the role of a middle manager at Hell Incorporated, tasked with processing sinners, resurrecting those deemed worthy, and running the underworld like a business. The game’s new update, named “Imployee Retention,” came out today, July 27, on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Sintopia’s recent update introduces new tools for managing the flow of souls through Hell. A new feature called the Souls Gate helps regulate the movement of spirits to keep them moving efficiently toward their destinations. Two additional tools, the Ground Flattener and Souls Relocator, let players clear obstacles and reroute souls back to the game’s central hub without needing to rebuild roads. Beyond the new tools, Sintopia’s “Imployee Retention” update includes a range of quality-of-life changes, with full patch notes available through the game’s official channels. To coincide with the update, Sintopia’s base game is discounted 20% for a limited time, through August 10. In Sintopia, players build and manage a network of sin-processing facilities, oversee a workforce of “imployees,” and work to keep an overworld population in line by addressing violations tied to the seven deadly sins. The game blends the hands-off world-influencing of a god game with the infrastructure and logistics management of a city-builder, a combination reviewers have compared to a mashup of Black & White and Dungeon Keeper. Sintopia’s road to release was a long one. Piraknights first previewed the game through a series of demos beginning in March 2025, initially planning an Early Access launch later that year. In August 2025, Piraknights and Team17 opted to skip Early Access entirely in favor of additional playtesting ahead of a full release, which ultimately landed on April 16, 2026, on PC. Critical reception at Sintopia’s launch was mixed to positive. On Steam, the game holds a “Very Positive” rating from more than 880 reviews, translating to roughly 82% positive. Several outlets praised the game’s colorful, cartoonish art style and its satirical take on corporate bureaucracy applied to the afterlife, along with the strategic depth that emerges once players move past the early hours. Other reviewers were more mixed, pointing to gameplay that could feel repetitive in Hell and overly hands-off in the Overworld, with some suggesting the game’s central concept was strong but still in need of further refinement. Piraknights Games was founded in 2022 by five industry veterans covering art, design, programming, and management. The studio describes its approach as blending discipline and creativity, drawing on the “part pirates, part knights” ethos reflected in its name. Team17, founded in 1990 and now part of Everplay Group plc, publishes Sintopia alongside a portfolio of more than 150 titles. The publisher’s catalog includes Dredge, Date Everything, and Overcooked!, as well as long-running franchises like Worms, The Escapists, and Golf With Your Friends. Epic taps Blizzard's Battle.net lead to fix the Epic Games Store as Steam dominates

Epic has hired a new and seasoned VP to lead the Epic Games Store as the storefront struggles to compete with Valve's Steam. Martin Keely, who had been with Blizzard for seven years when he left his role as SVP overseeing the Battle.net launcher, is the new Epic Games Store VP and GM, a role previously held by Steve Allison. Allison boasted about the Epic Games Store's free games program in a GamesRadar+ interview from February, but he left the company in July and took up a new position at Saber Interactive. In a Linkedin post , Keely shares: "I'm excited to get started with the team delivering new capabilities that elevate player, creator and developer experiences. And I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to play a role in shaping an open and sustainable gaming ecosystem. To my new Epic colleagues: I look forward to connecting soon and building together." As for his time at Blizzard, Keely says he "learned something new every day" he worked there and is "proud of how we worked to achieve growth and record results as a platform -- unlocking the greatness of gaming and bringing joy to millions of players around the world." Keely's announcement comes as Epic struggles to chip away at Steam's not-a-monopoly on the PC games market. It's not uncommon for companies to poach talent from their competition for all sorts of reasons, although the exact details of Keely's appointment are unclear. What this means for PC gamers is that you will very likely see some pretty significant changes to the Epic Games Store in the coming months. One thing's for sure, it'll take a lot more than Epic CEO Tim Sweeney deriding Steam's policy on AI disclosures to turn the Epic Games Store into a legitimate threat to Valve. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says new multiplayer games flop because everyone's "already formed solid human networks in Fortnite, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and Apex Legends"

Call of Duty: Black Ops Fans Discover Cut Zombies Content Over 15 Years After Release

Call of Duty: Black Ops fans have uncovered a new cut Zombies mode from the game, over a decade and a half after its original release. YouTuber JTAG uncovered a tower defense Zombies mode in the recent PS4 port of Black Ops 1 and uploaded gameplay of it. It's clearly unfinished, so the mode is a bit crude, but players would've been able to place down turrets to stop hordes of the undead from advancing through a maze-like map. It seems as though the player would've been able to look down at the action from a bird's-eye view, not unlike Bloons Tower Defense, but they also would've been able to get on the ground and shoot enemies just like regular Call of Duty. It's possible this was scrapped in favor of Dead Ops Arcade, a hidden Zombies mode in the original Black Ops game. The mode was a twin-stick arcade shooter that players could access by using a secret computer terminal in the main menu of Black Ops. The mode became a cult-classic and has returned in various Black Ops titles over the year. Treyarch has experimented with the Zombies formula a lot over the years, and it's not exactly a surprise to see something like this turn up. The original Zombies mode was made by a small team of passionate developers who were developing the project in secret. It wasn't officially sanctioned by Activision and used recycled assets from Call of Duty: World at War. There was zero guarantee it would even make it into the final game, but once the team presented it to executives, they realized it was special and worth tacking on. And now, it's one of the most beloved pieces of the Call of Duty franchise. It wouldn't be surprising if this tower defense mode was one of many experiments done to try and find more weird ways to expand the mode. It seems unlikely it will ever return, but it's cool to have a peek behind the curtain, especially when it's remained a secret for such a long time and may have never been discovered if not for the recent ports. Ubisoft Gives Free PC Copies to Xbox Owners of Select Games

Ubisoft is giving Xbox owners free access to some of their games on PC. Today, Ubisoft and Xbox revealed a new expansion to their ongoing partnership. Starting immediately, those who own the following games on Xbox will get them for free on PC through Ubisoft Connect by August 4th: Assassin’s Creed Mirage Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Far Cry 6 Immortals Fenyx Rising Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Riders Republic Skull and Bones The Crew 2 The Crew Motorfest Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege The games should appear in your Ubisoft Connect library by next week, so long as your accounts are linked. If you happen to purchase these games on Xbox later, you will get them on PC automatically. Unfortunately, this doesn't go both ways. If you buy one of these games on PC first, you will not get it on Xbox. If you're someone who previously played on console, but made the jump to PC, this is a great benefit. Additionally, Ubisoft has also added a bunch of premium editions for Ubisoft games like Assassin's Creed Shadows to Xbox's PC app. Recently, Xbox has been making a lot of moves toward PC. It's unclear if this is all part of one big deliberate plan or if it's coincidental, but last week, Xbox made select backward-compatible titles for the OG Xbox available on PC . More titles are expected to be added in the future. There are also rumors that Microsoft is planning a feature that will let players digitize their physical games library , possibly ahead of the next Xbox console. However, with this ongoing shift toward PC, it could make them accessible on PC. It's believed the next Xbox is expected to be more PC-like, so this could all be part of one big initatitve to prepare for the next-generation of Xbox. Cade Onder is a freelancer for IGN's news team. On top of everything, Xbox had a major service outage today

In case being an Xbox player wasn’t tricky enough, the company has had a major outage that began last night and has extended well into today. The service’s status page confirms that players may experience issues logging in, accessing online services and playing their games — including their disc-based games. As of the most recent report, at the time of this writing, some services are still not accessible. The company updated on service via social media , saying, “XBOX incident update: we apologize for the long-running nature of this issue. Things are slowly improving, though players worldwide may still experience failures launching games, along with potential sign-in and purchase issues.” An Xbox spokesperson pointed to these service messages when asked for comment. A major console gaming service going through such a struggle would be irksome enough, but this comes as the cherry on top of several weeks of turbulence at Xbox , including announced layoffs of over 3,200 people from its various games-related brands and studios. It’s also divesting at least four, possibly five, of its developers, resulting in their accompanying IP leaving the Xbox stables. The brand’s new management are also planning a major reset of Xbox, but I’m quite certain this is not what they had in mind. In addition to the above, there’s a non-Xbox-specific reason that this outage feels culturally relevant: Gaming is moving towards a digital-only future, or so recent trends would have one believe. Sony confirmed recently that it will no longer produce physical games starting in 2028, leading to a larger conversation about digital ownership and the bottleneck of access. The Xbox outage feels like a data point in that conversation, as it means that users aren’t able to access games for which they’ve ostensibly purchased the right to do so. The Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Beta Proves Fans Still Really Want That Blade Movie

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is coming off a record-breaking open beta weekend, where two particular characters reigned supreme over the rest of the game’s cast. Despite some glaring issues that plagued PC users, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls still had a massively successful open beta, raking in more players on Steam than any other fighting game’s open beta before it. Specifically, Marvel Tokon attracted 33,233 players at its all-time peak, just under 500 more than Street Fighter 6’s famously packed beta back in 2023. For reference, that number was 32,787 , while, for comparison’s sake, Tekken 8’s open beta garnered 15,035 players later that same year. Of those players, a significant portion of them chose two characters more than any others. Those characters are Magick and Blade, respectively, with Magick being the consistent leader of the two. As seen in stats presented by the FGC’s resident data-compiler and infographic creator AlietteFaye, character usage in Vibranium ranks and above saw an overwhelming majority using Magick overall, as well as using her as a Team Leader. Blade wasn’t far behind, ranking as the second most-used character overall. His position fell to fourth when it came to Team Leaders, with Spidey and Shuri in second and third place, though he was by far the most popular Assist Character out of the lot. Magick still maintained her popularity in this regard, coming in second as an Assist. Magneto and Spider-Man were Tokon’s third and fourth-most popular picks, both in overall usage and as Assist characters, while on the other end of the lineup, Danger was consistently the least popular character in all aspects. Miss Marvel was just ahead of her in overall usage and assists, but was far more popular as a Team Leader. A final look at the character usage in Vibranium and above during Tokon's open beta. Data was taken just before the servers went down! (Pray that Arcsys makes the leaderboards a bit easier to navigate/filter so that I can do more detailed breakdowns.) #MARVELTOKON #MARVELTōkon https://t.co/atAQytKGhI — AlietteFaye | Day -232 Ryu Hater (@AlietteFaye) July 27, 2026 While this data was only compiled within the game’s highest ranks, it certainly reflects many of the matches we saw over the weekend. You couldn’t go online without seeing a Magick or a Blade, a trend that speaks to their popularity within the broader gaming community. It’s little surprise that Blade was one of the most-used characters during the open beta. Fans have been pining for another Blade movie and video game for ages now, with Marvel President Kevin Feige recently admitting he felt like a “gigantic loser and failure” for not getting the Mahershala Ali flick off the ground after seven years. The Daywalker’s game adaptation is also in peril, with Xbox looking to either sell or close Arkane, the studio responsible for its development, in the thick of Microsoft’s massive restructuring efforts . Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the development house "is beginning required consultation with its Works Council to review potential strategic options, ” leaving fans hopeful that there is some light at the end of the tunnel for a Blade game. For now, players have Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls to look forward to, which releases on August 6, 2026. Marvel's Wolverine isn't far behind either, releasing in September 15, 2026 for the PlayStation 5. Virginia (she/her) is IGN’s News Editor. Star Wars Zero Company is more XCOM than RPG, as dev confirms there's no branching story or romances: "This is still a turn-based tactics game at its heart"

Star Wars Zero Company , the upcoming strategy game from a studio of former XCOM leads, has always been billed as exactly that: a turn-based tactics game livened up by the soap operatic flair of the Star Wars universe. Still, as with XCOM, there are bound to be various RPG elements specifically in its progression and class systems, but narratively, mostly everything's going to be on rails, studio Bit Reactor has confirmed. As spotted by PC Gamer , the studio recently hosted a Discord Q&A and answered some key questions about Star Wars Zero Company, including whether there will be branching paths and romance options. No and no was the answer, more or less. "There aren't any romance systems or branching paths," reads the studio's response. "While we are excited about pushing the genre forward with a more cinematic approach, this is still a turn-based tactics game at its heart where adept skill and strategy are needed to overcome tense combat challenges." The developer did specify that there will be "story moments that can alter based on who you have in your squad, but the overall story is a linear one from beginning to end." And speaking of which, that ending "will be largely the same for everyone." Again, this isn't a massive surprise given Bit Reactor's pedigree, and as a big XCOM fan I'm actually encouraged to hear the former devs are doubling down on what they do best. After all, RPG fans already have a feast on the horizon with the Knights of the Old Republic remake , although to be fair it's been a hot minute since we've seen or heard anything about that game. Here are the best Star Wars games to play right now.
