Xbox is back online, tech lead pledges "we'll do better" so similar failures "can't ruin your night again" after outage stopped fans playing digital and physical games

Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet has commented on the outages that hit consoles yesterday, and has pledged to investigate the issues. Following a PlayStation outage – which lined up quite nicely with the launch of the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls beta, and was a lovely bit of synergy with Sony's pledge to go all-digital – Xbox players got to experience the same this week . The outage lasted several hours and prevented Xbox players from accessing their profiles. Crucially, it also stopped them from finding games in the Xbox store, accessing their digital games, and even some physical ones (presumably those which effectively work as a Game-Key Card), which is the cherry on top of the push for digital games. Van Vliet has taken to Twitter following the resolution of the outage, saying, "this is an unacceptable situation, and we must do better to support you." He adds: "Over the coming weeks, you'll hear more from me about our services, our platform, and the work we're doing to make Xbox better. And that starts with some transparency about this incident." Earlier today, many players began experiencing issues with sign in, enumerating their game libraries and playing games. The team has worked hard throughout the day to fix the issue, and we've restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nonetheless, this is an unacceptable situation, and… https://t.co/3y9TjxzKls July 28, 2026 He explains that the outage was due to the failure of a licensing service outside Xbox that the console relies on, which in turn caused the issues. Once the outage was noticed, the team "declared a major incident" and began work on sorting it. "We're running a full post-incident review," Van Vliet says, adding that "I care less about the one-line root cause and more about the real questions: why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can't ruin your night again." Crucially, he pledges: "We'll do better." Still, the timing of these outages feel like they came at the right time. Players are still very unhappy about the prospect of an all-digital future following Sony's announcement, and there are fears that Project Helix will also not be supporting physical games. So hopefully, these events serve as a wake-up call to Sony and Microsoft . Xbox is reportedly testing a feature to digitize physical game collections as PlayStation decides to phase out discs. Indie dev explains how their forgotten 8-year-old Steam game suddenly became popular thanks to an Undertale mod

An indie developer has explained how their forgotten free Steam game from eight years ago suddenly became popular thanks to Undertale. RetroSpecter, who says they’ve been making games for nearly a decade, recounted the story on the IndieDev Reddit page (as spotted by PC Gamer ), explaining why a game they had made early in their career and no longer paid attention to had taken on a new life of its own. The game, Crashphalt, is a 4-player competitive platformer where players use a ground pound move to create shockwaves in the terrain, in an attempt to knock opponents off the stage. Read More...

After 15 Years, Resident Evil 5 Has Finally Been Dethroned as The Series' Best-Selling Game

After 15 years, Resident Evil 5 is no longer the highest-selling entry in Capcom's survival horror series, the publisher has revealed. New sales figures for the Resident Evil franchise show its sales crown has now been taken by the Resident Evil 2 remake, which has now shifted 19.75 million copies — enough to slip past Resident Evil 5's final total of 19.01 million. These totals are interesting for several reasons. Firstly, the fact that Resi 5's sales have taken a decade and a half to topple says a lot about the huge excitement for that game when it initially arrived — riding on the coat tails of the beloved original Resi 4, despite ultimately being judged as nowhere near as good. Secondly, these totals show that the Resident Evil series' back catalogue continues to sell really well. Capcom's Resident Evil 2 remake launched back in 2019 and is clearly still shifting copies (and has likely benefited from the subsequent launches of other Leon S. Kennedy-starring titles such as the Resi 4 remake and Resident Evil Requiem ). Speaking of the Resi 4 remake and Requiem, you might wonder where their sales are in all of this. Well, they are still selling brilliantly, too — and may yet both eclipse Resident Evil 2 to become the franchise's top sellers, given enough time. Resident Evil Requiem has now sold 8 million copies, a figure that will undoubtedly rise far further as the game gets discounted over time and receives its highly-anticipated post-launch expansion. Resident Evil 4's remake, meanwhile, is now on an impressive 16 million copies sold. All combined, the Resident Evil franchise has now sold a combined 213 million copies across all of its games — a figure which sees it edge past the 212 million total sales of Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise, although these have not yet been updated for this financial quarter. Other Capcom games selling well include new franchise Pragmata (now up to 2.51 million copies sold) and Monster Hunter: World which has now sold an astonishing 30.45 million copies. Next up for the Resident Evil franchise is the launch of Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie on September 16, before the arrival of Resident Evil Veronica sometime in 2027 . Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Update Adds Tom Holland's Brand New Day Spidey Suit

PlayStation 5 blockbuster Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has today been updated to add two new Spidey suits, including Tom Holland's new costume from Spider-Man: Brand New Day . In celebration of this week's new Spider-Man film, the web-slinging PS5 sequel has been patched to v1.005.000, which adds two new Spidey designs, plus support for Enhanced PSSR on PlayStation 5 Pro, as well as Power Saver mode. Sony first announced the PS5 Power Saver mode for certain games last year . When manually enabled, supported PS5 games will scale back performance and will allow your console to reduce its power consumption — a neat way to save on your energy bills and (slightly) cut down on your home's impact on the environment. The Brand New Day suit is available in-game now, labelled as the "Fresh Start" suit. Also available is the Spider-Man costume from Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls . It's a Brand New Day for Marvel's Spider-Man 2! 🕷️ Get TWO NEW SUITS for Peter Parker in today's update, including the Fresh Start and the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls suits. v1.005.000 also adds support for Enhanced PSSR on PS5 Pro and Power Saver mode! #SpiderMan2PS5 https://t.co/ln63ra7DeW — Insomniac Games (@insomniacgames) July 28, 2026 Marvel's Spider-Man 2 developer Insomniac Games has regularly kept its most recent Spidey game updated with new suits, so these additions don't come as a huge surprise — even if their arrival via a free update is very welcome. Next up from the studio is Marvel's Wolverine, due to arrive exclusively for PS5 on September 15. And, of course, just hours remain until the launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Officially due for release in theaters on July 31, previews begin tomorrow. Early reactions from press are already on social media — all of which are very positive — and the movie is now projected to be the biggest box office launch of the year so far . Keep an eye for IGN's official review soon. Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. You can reach Tom at [email protected] or find him on Bluesky @tomphillipseg.bsky.social

All Halo Campaign Evolved Terminal locations

The Halo Campaign Evolved Terminals can all be obtained with some thorough searching, but plenty of them are very easy to miss – and don't think your knowledge of the Terminal locations in Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary will help, as they're in completely different places now. Unlike the Skulls, Terminals don't make any noise besides some bleeps and bloops that are only audible when you're very close. Also unlike the Skulls, there are only 13 of them – that's one per Halo Campaign Evolved level – so finding and activating them all for some unlockable lore entries isn’t too much of a chore. To help you find every Terminal in Halo Campaign Evolved, I've laid out all 13 locations below. Halo Campaign Evolved Pillar of Autumn Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/LVDL3WWwrYm79BVEHFrGab.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Charlie, when going through the upper cryo room with the cracked windows. This is the room where Cortana says, "it looks like the Covenant wanted to catch you napping". Proceed through the next door, then immediately turn left to find another open door leading into a small room with red lights and lots of screens everywhere. The Pillar of Autumn Terminal in Halo Campaign Evolved is at the far end, which unlocks the Approach entry. Halo Campaign Evolved Halo Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/g3BG82zC7v2XbjVtaTZEjk.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Bravo, as you drive into the "this cave is not a natural formation" Forerunner tunnel. Drive through the tunnel until you reach the straight section with two small bumps in the road and a large window on your right. Hop out your Warthog, then jump through the window and carefully drop down to the ledge directly below. You'll find the Halo Terminal, Forgotten, down there. Halo Campaign Evolved Truth and Reconciliation Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/tdRBSb3kWxJipq65p68hmX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Charlie, as you make your way to the brig to find Captain Keyes after clearing out the ship's command room. After navigating several corridors after the command room, you'll eventually arrive at a large room with several doors around the perimeter. Go through the one immediately on the right as you enter and you'll find yourself in one of the prison rooms. Use the central console to deactivate the forcefields and then head inside the cell almost opposite the console to find the Truth and Reconciliation Terminal and get the Inquisitor lore entry. Halo Campaign Evolved Silent Cartographer Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/CZqdzPD2JNKSsNuecrePgX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Bravo, just after you shut down the security system. From the security system console, turn around and head to the outer walkway of this area and look for the extended platform. The Status Update Terminal is behind a small Forerunner structure with two pointy bits. Halo Campaign Evolved Assault on the Control Room Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/TnvLoJiHeEaAfwhp6uopkX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Charlie, after you've gone up the ice cave. When you emerge into the canyon from the ice cave, follow the path to the right, then go through the doorway in the central rock formation on your left. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/W579W2J94z3paYmWmgGtmX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) Head through the door and follow the corridor until you reach a large, empty central rooms. From here, go up the ramp that leads onto a balcony, then look to your right once you get onto the balcony. You'll find the Terminal for Assault on the Control Room, Tangent 1, tucked in the corner. Halo Campaign Evolved 343 Guilty Spark Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gcnRhAwsUPK8UvoQLpPtcX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Bravo, after backtracking partway through the Forerunner facility while fighting the Flood. You'll eventually reach a point on your journey through this facility where you have to go through a door with two large, pale symbols on either side. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QDRsZngvyxXnkw9gdFBrTX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) Head through and turn left to find a cluster of dead marines and all their gear. From here take the next right to go down a dark corridor where you'll find the Halo Campaign Evolved 343 Guilty Spark Terminal – Tangent 2, which carries on from the last one. Halo Campaign Evolved The Library Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/e25ncynakksW9r7kcHzLcX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Bravo, after 343 Guilty Spark opens a large door and you're presented with two consoles, with a prompt directing you to the one on the right. Ignore the objective and activate the console on the left to open a doorway on the left. https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/mCTsCx5PYeoKi4oHgqc8mX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) Head through and then go through the small hole in the Flood-infested wall. This will lead you into a small room featuring a dead marine and the Library Terminal, which rounds out the Tangent series into a trilogy. Halo Campaign Evolved Two Betrayals Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/R73Vbqg6LyxUAjpT8ABGYX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Alpha, right after destroying all the attacking Sentinels. Rather than heading out the door straight ahead, head right and run around the ring walkway instead. You'll run into the Two Betrayals Terminal here, unlocking the Alone entry. Halo Campaign Evolved Keyes Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/qRQ9WNzpBH4eVEMmbVjHgX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Charlie, when trying to ascend to a higher deck in the shuttle bay. After dropping off to the ground floor of the shuttle bay, follow the objective marker through the door then right and up the inclined corridor – there are always Flood enemies and two Hunters in here. When you get to the first junction halfway up the corridor, turn left then left again to find the Terminal for Keyes in Halo Campaign Evolved. Halo Campaign Evolved The Maw Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WimPSNT3APX6bounbXvYWX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Alpha, after clearing out the mess hall room. From the entrance to the mess hall, bear right and you'll find the Arrival Terminal in a nook on top of some UNSC boxes. Halo Campaign Evolved Boarding Action Terminal https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/PZ7VRWSq5nNJqNn7kcTgVX.jpg (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Delta, after you've taken the gravity lift upwards to head for the Triumph of Tolerance's upper decks. This grav lift will put you right in front of the corridor and doorway you’re meant to go through for the final combat encounter of the mission, but the terminal is behind you. Turn to face the opposite direction and then go through the door on the right to find the Heavy Burden Terminal. Halo Campaign Evolved The Most Dangerous Game Terminal (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) Rally Point Charlie, after rescuing the marines from the brig. Fight through the rest of the ship following the objective markers until you reach a room with several windows on the left that let you see many sarcophagus-like devices in a large room. Instead of going through the next door, head through the one on the right and you'll find a storage room full of UNSC gear, including the Halo Campaign Evolved Terminal for this mission, Penitent Report. Halo Campaign Evolved Heavy Burden Terminal (Image credit: Xbox Game Studios) From Rally Point Bravo, immediately after the cutscene where Chief and Johnson get the starholo data. At the start of this Rally Point, you'll be facing a pair of doors on the far side of this room on the ground floor. Go through either of them to reach another pair of doors. Go through either of those doors to get inside a Covenant armory, then go through the next door to reach a relatively small storage room. The Terminal for Heavy Burden is hidden behind the Covenant equipment on the left. These Terminals are just one of the many Halo Campaign Evolved changes compared to the original. Bear in mind that finding them all is also going to add a fairly significant amount of time to how long it takes you to beat Halo Campaign Evolved too. © GamesRadar+. I put the Razer Blade 18 against the fastest gaming laptop I've tested, and the top dog nearly folded

The Razer Blade 18 took its place on my list of the best gaming laptops on the market last week, after making it out off the test bench with a 4/5 review score. It wasn't the dual 4K / 1200p resolution display or the slimmer 18-inch chassis that put it there, though, it was the fact that the Razer Blade 18 nearly beat the MSI Raider A18 HX 's performance. That's a big deal considering no gaming laptop has managed to near that beast's benchmark records since I reviewed it last year. Of course, time has moved on for the MSI Raider, and the numbers today tell a different story where value is concerned. With an extra 12 months under its belt, the RTX 5090 MSI Raider A19 HX A9W is a little harder to find on the shelves. Instead, you're more likely looking at an RTX 5080 model (16GB vs 24GB), which isn't going to give you the same payoff for 4K gaming. The invoice is far kinder, though. MSI Raider A18 HX A9W (RTX 5080) Razer Blade 18 (RTX 5090) Right now, the RTX 5090 model is only available at Excalbur PC on backorder, but its age means it still undercuts the Blade 18 at $4,499.99. So what does that mean in real-world play? At full 4K resolution, the two machines are tying. The Blade 18 bookends its runs, with wins in the lightest title, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and the most demanding, Cyberpunk 2077 (though only just), while the Raider scores higher in Total War: Three Kingdoms and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. These are still neck and neck scores, though, a trend that continues further down the resolution ladder. https://flo.uri.sh/visualisation/29705938/embed In FHD and QHD+, we've got a similar situation, though the Blade takes a lead in QHD performance overall. https://flo.uri.sh/story/3738741/embed Numbers match up once more when we looked at synthetic benchmarks, though, with MSI taking the more demanding Steel Nomad test alongside the easier Fire Strike run. https://flo.uri.sh/visualisation/29705596/embed It all comes down to Geekbench 6, then, and the MSI Raider A18 HX A9W's higher average single-core test. This is a machine using the abominably powerful AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, after all - even the latest Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus inside Sneki's rig can't quite compete. The Blade scored 3,053 in its single-core test, while the Ryzen 9 typically averages at around 3,186. This is the only test in which a winner is decided. Does that mean big spenders should buy the MSI Raider A18 HX A9W? Not quite. The Razer Blade 18 has still made its way to my top list, now sitting as the best luxury gaming laptop I've tested so far. That's because, while it just whiskers out of the performance race against the MSI Raider it does so in a far sturdier chassis, with a much better keyboard, a higher refresh rate display, and a surprisingly solid battery life. (Image credit: Future) If I had $5,500 to spend on a gaming laptop, the lack of OLED or Mini LED display would be the only turn off here. Razer's decision to instead fit a dual-resolution 4K (240Hz) / FHD (440Hz) screen up top means you're not getting the more immersive contrast, color profile, and impact of a more luxurious panel. It's also unlikely that most players will be looking to fully take advantage of the top end of that 440Hz refresh rate - outside of elite competition, the vast majority of us will be able to get along just fine with framerates coming out of that RTX 5090 in 4K. The dual screen is an added expense that doesn't serve the majority of the market and cuts the Blade 18 off from the kinds of premium upgrades readily available in much cheaper machines. That being said, there are very few 18-inch 4K gaming laptops on the market right now, and if that high-end build quality, excellent performance, and 240Hz refresh rate are worth more to you than color contrast it's a difficult one to beat. See all gaming laptop deals at Best Buy I'm also hunting down all the best Asus gaming laptops and the best Razer laptops on the market. For something a little chunkier, check out the best Alienware laptops I've tested so far.

Square Enix Dev Yoshi-P Says Final Fantasy 6, 8, and 9 Remakes Would Probably Have to Be Released in Four or Even Five Installments

At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin on Sunday, Final Fantasy 14 director-producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida invited Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi to the stage for a chat. Over this 75-minute Naoki’s Room section , the two Final Fantasy devs discussed their motivations, upcoming FF7/FF14 crossover content, and the future of the series. However, one comment may have quashed fans’ hopes for Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 8, or Final Fantasy 9 ever getting the remake treatment. The talk of remaking other FF games came up when Hamaguchi named Final Fantasy 6 as a big influence on his life. “Final Fantasy 6 is the reason I wanted to work in the game industry and it will always have a special place in my heart," he said. He added that whenever he mentions this in interviews, it inevitably sparks hopes and headlines that Hamaguchi will remake FF6, something that he always has to deny. Yoshida added, “I understand fans’ feelings. But please think about it." He then went on to explain why these remakes would be such a huge effort to develop and release. "Final Fantasy 6 is an incredibly huge game, and the same goes for other titles like Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 9. Since Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I understand why people ask for these remakes. But if we did remake these other games, we would probably have to release them in four or even five installments.” Some have taken Yoshida's comments here to pour cold water on the chances of further Final Fantasy remakes in the Final Fantasy7 remake style. They echo those Final Fantasy 6 director Yoshinori Kitase issued in 2024 , when he sad a Final Fantasy 6 remake akin to that of Final Fantasy 7's could take around 20 years to complete. Kitase said that because of the depth of Final Fantasy 6, with so much content and so many characters, it would take twice the length of Final Fantasy 7 Remake to develop and release. Hamaguchi went on to shout-out the Final Fantasy Remake trilogy team for their dedication and for sticking with him for over 10 years of development. “Not only was it a matter of timing, I think it was a miracle that we were able to get these people who were willing to stick around and keep motivated to work on so many of these titles back-to-back,” he said. “So that’s why I can’t just say, ‘Yeah, I’ll remake FF6,’ as it's not quite that simple.” At the end of the talk, Yoshida pointed out that after they had mentioned the difficulties of remaking FF6 and other titles, there were many comments from livestream viewers along the lines of, ‘I want this guy (Hamaguchi) to make Final Fantasy 17,’ which Yoshida described as “the highest praise you could get.” Hamaguchi replied: “Can I respond to that? If I do…” but Yoshida waved him away. This promoted many excited comments from viewers as to what this meant and if we can take this to mean that Square Enix has already decided to make Final Fantasy 17. Some have even interpreted this as a sign that Hamaguchi may already be slated to work on Final Fantasy 17, but it seems pretty tenuous to assume that, especially considering he still has his hands full with the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Yoshida then asked Hamaguchi for both his most difficult and most rewarding experiences working on the Final Fantasy franchise. As a manager with a huge team of people, Hamaguchi said the most difficult thing is to unite everyone behind the same vision for the game and make sure they are heading in the same direction. According to Hamaguchi, the most rewarding thing is being able to make these games with the support of such a huge, global fanbase. “I don’t think anything could make me happier," he added. Looking back on his career, Hamaguchi reminisced about how he spent ages fine-tuning fire effects on Final Fantasy 12 when he first started out as a programmer at Square Enix 24 years ago. “As an individual creator, it’s very satisfying to get immersed in your work. However, I think that’s something you’re able to do more earlier in your career. Later on, the satisfaction comes more from leading a team and getting them to utilize their abilities.” he explained. “This doesn’t change how I feel about the games. I still want to make something amazing.” Yoshida and Hamaguchi then turned their attention to the new FF7-themed content coming to FF14 that their teams are collaborating on. This includes the Keybound Brawler game coming to FF14’s Golden Saucer in October, plus new Barret and Tifa-style outfits. The teams are currently working on the crossover raid Beyond the Lifestream, which will bring the FF7 remake series to FF14. It’s scheduled to come out with version 8.01 of Final Fantasy 14 (release date TBC, but set to drop before Final Fantasy 7 Revelations comes out in early 2027). Regarding Final Fantasy 7, Hamaguchi reiterated that the whole reason they started the remake trilogy was to bring FF7 to the next generation of players, many of whom never experienced the 1997 PS1 classic. “We want to introduce new players to Final Fantasy 7 in a way that they can really understand what made the original so great. So we went into more depth on the depiction of the world, the lore, characters and all these elements in the remake trilogy," he said. Throughout the talk, both developers praised each other for their respective work and achievements, revealing they don’t need much sleep and are still enthusiastic and committed to the Final Fantasy series. Yoshida praised Hamaguchi as being the number one at Square Enix in terms of team, task and schedule management. Towards the end of the talk, Hamaguchi expressed hopes that he and Yoshida’s teams can collaborate more in the future. Embark Studios releases update for ARC Raiders and collab with The Finals

Embark Studios launched the 1.39 update for the extraction adventure ARC Raiders with matchmaking improvements and a collab with The Finals. The update includes Embark’s cross-game summer celebration with The Finals, the competitive multiplayer game launched by Embark in 2023. It also adds the new ‘Dweller Set’ to the store rotation and additional quality of life improvements and bug fixes. Highlights of the 1.39 live update ARC Raiders has a new outfit for Dwellers. Source: Embark Studios Matchmaking improvements will be tested over the next three weeks, starting from today. The matchmaking changes follow on from earlier matchmaking improvements made on May 20, which reduced the matchmaking impact of defensive actions. This means that if another raider initiates combat with you in an ambush or other situation, you’re free to defend youself without worrying that you’ll be placed into future games with player killers. ARC Raiders started out with a vibe of player cooperation against ARCs, or environmental enemies in the game, rather than combat between human players. Following positive player feedback on those earlier adjustments, this will now be extended so that only the PvP fights players choose to initiate will impact their playstyle estimate, while defensive actions will have no influence at all on playstyle estimate. The team will continue to collect and monitor player feedback throughout the trial period. More information, including a player survey to share feedback, can be found in the patch notes here. Embark Summer Celebration: Embark continues to celebrate summer across worlds with both ARC Raiders and The Finals. Through July 30, players can complete a set of contracts in The Finals to unlock the Azimuth outfit and Archeologist backpack bundle in ARC Raiders. Then, from July 30 through August 20, players who log 3 hours in ARC Raiders will earn the Azimuth Bundle in The Finals. And ARC Raiders will have a new cosmetic, The Dweller Set. It’s available in the in-game store rotation, the Set includes the Dweller outfit as well as additional cosmetic items. The post Embark Studios releases update for ARC Raiders and collab with The Finals appeared first on GamesBeat .

Capcom reports another strong quarter as Resident Evil Requiem passes 8 million sold and Pragmata hits 2.5 million

Capcom has reported another strong financial quarter, with sales and profits up year-on-year. The company has been on a run of healthy financial reports, due to a combination of a steady string of well-received new releases, and regular discounts leading to continued sales of older games from its catalogue. Arc Raiders makes it official: "Only the PvP fights players choose to initiate" will impact your aggression rating for matchmaking

You simply will not believe this: Arc Raiders is messing with the matchmaking again. In its latest update, developer Embark Studios says it's reinforcing a previous change that received positive feedback from players, and this time, it's spelling it out loud and clear. "The matchmaking changes follow on from earlier matchmaking improvements made on May 20, which reduced the matchmaking impact of defensive actions," Embark explains . That May update made it clear that "defending yourself is no longer treated the same as starting a fight" in terms of your behavior tracking. Embark finally, properly pulled back the curtain on the matchmaking algorithm in that same update, explaining just how Arc Raiders uses PvP aggression to group like-minded players. Today, the studio says it's going even further. "Following positive player feedback on those earlier adjustments, this will now be extended so that only the PvP fights players choose to initiate will impact their playstyle estimate, while defensive actions will have no influence at all on playstyle estimate," Embark explains. "The team will continue to collect and monitor player feedback throughout the trial period. More information, including a player survey to share feedback, can be found in the patch notes here." Every day, we inch closer to an Arc Raiders PvE mode – which is technically already available in the Chinese branch of the game. Just last week, Embark revealed yet another change in a similar vein. The idea with that experiment was to better optimize matchmaking for playstyle and team size, meaning friendly players would be more likely to find each other, and duos would be less likely to run into trios. "When Arc Raiders was at its peak," Embark was burning 30 terabytes of data per day tracking every single bullet fired: "We want to know who shot first."
