Fable Just Got a 1-2 Punch of Very Bad News

Without a doubt, Fable is one of the most anticipated games coming soon under the Xbox umbrella, but a recent report shines light on two otherwise potential dark spots for the game. Ultimately how it is received remains to be seen when Fable releases in February 2027 , but Playground Games and Xbox arguably need to reassert a narrative for the game. After all, fans know it's been delayed a couple of times, and that in and of itself is a question of confidence for some consumers.

Steam's Free-to-Keep Promotion Only Has 1 Free Upcoming Game Confirmed for August 2026

Steam 's Free-to-Keep Promotion is one of the best sources for free PC games on the internet, especially because they are permanent additions to anyone's digital library, but it seems August might be a slower month. What makes it stand out, even compared to Steam's own Free Weekend promotions , is that each game can be downloaded and kept forever (via Steam at least) as long as it is claimed before a specific date. For August, as of this writing, there's only 1 game confirmed right now.

VR Action Platformer Hyperstacks Coming To SteamVR This Week

Hyperstacks is also exiting Early Access for full release on Quest. Hyperstacks developer Squirrel Bytes has announced that their action platformer is coming to SteamVR and leaving Early Access on Meta Quest on July 30. The game, which combines combat, parkour action, and logic puzzles, has been in development for over eight years and has been available on Quest Early Access for some time. Check out the Steam release announcement trailer here: Some finer details from the developer follow: In Hyperstacks, you'll progress through campaign levels shaped by a cast of distinct characters, each bringing their own personality and style of challenge. Between campaign levels, return to the lobby to interact with them, take on small quests, and unlock new mechanics before diving back into the next challenge. The Hyperstacks experience is built around three core pillars: Combat - you'll wield a variety of weapons all built to feel great in VR, and fight against melee and ranged enemies through bullet-hell battles. Parkour - You'll climb, swing, and improvise your way through obstacle courses using grappling hooks, ziplines, and teleporters. Logic - You'll interact with simple puzzles and elaborate contraptions. There's also a level editor in which players have access to the same tools that each campaign level is built with. Custom levels can be shared with the community, creating a growing library of levels and challenges. Hyperstacks releases in full on Meta Quest and SteamVR on July 30. A SteamVR demo is available now .

Final Fantasy 14 Will Be The Biggest Game on Nintendo Switch 2 by Install Size, and Take Up Almost Half of the Console's Entire Memory

Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy 14 will land on Switch 2 with an almighty thud next month, as its honking install size will take up almost half of the console's 256GB memory. Final Fantasy 14 will weigh in at 117.2GB when it launches for Switch 2 on August 4, an eShop listing for the title has now revealed. Here's hoping you have space for it — or the budget to buy a new SD card. That's around double the game's install size on PlayStation 5, which benefits from some clever file compression technology, though similar to the game's memory footprint on PC. It's a hefty download, though perhaps to be expected when you consider the MMO's size and the amount of content that has been added over the years. The upside to all this is that the filesize includes all of the game's previous five expansions — Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker and Dawntrail — so you won't need more space to play any of those. The downside? A sixth expansion, Evercold, is already on the way — meaning you'll likely need even more memory space from next January. Somewhat amusingly, Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix is no stranger to holding the record for the biggest Switch 2 games by memory size. Until the launch of Final Fantasy 14, Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth holds the current record (91.8GB) for a single game, as well as the record for a game bundle (the Kingdom Hearts Collection, which includes a trio of titles that weigh in at 131GB total). Final Fantasy 14 game director Naoki Yoshida suited up in Bastion armor to take the stage at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin to confirm the title's long-awaited Switch 2 launch date over the weekend, alongside a laundry list of new updates coming in the near future . The game's first month on sale will be offered without any subscription charge as its servers are stabilized. After this period comes to an end, players will be required to purchase a subscription as normal. Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. Game Freak admits Beast of Reincarnation "doesn’t really fit our vibe" after decades of stylized Pokemon but knew "photorealism would be the best fit" for the action RPG

Beast of Reincarnation's director Kota Furushima has said that Game Freak didn't have a certain art style in mind when creating the game. The team took on a new challenge with the game's photo realistic look, and are aware that it doesn't look like a typical Game Freak game. In an interview with DenFamiNicoGamer that's been translated by GamesRadar+, Furushima outlines why he chose a more realistic style compared to the company's previous cartoony aesthetic. "I think the biggest thing for us is that it's a new challenge for Game Freak," he says. "When you first look at the visuals, I think it's the sort of game where it's difficult to tell the country it's made in. So I think a major point was that it's 'made by Game Freak.'" Aside from the Pokémon franchise, which the company is most famous for, Game Freak has worked on a number of games with a simpler, more colorful look, such as Drill Dozer, Tembo the Badass Elephant, and Little Town Hero. Furushima knows that Beast of Reincarnation has a very different art style to any of the games in the studio's library, but decided that the game's core concepts linked it more strongly to Game Freak than a childlike look would. "The first thing I thought was 'this doesn't really fit our vibe does it?'", he chuckles. "'This isn't a photorealistic graphics kind of studio.' That being said, we're not particular about specific styles. In terms of the concept, I think the major themes are not dissimilar to what Game Freak has worked on before. "When I was building the prototype I began to realize that photorealism would be the best fit for what I'm trying to express here," he says. Pokemon dev Game Freak says its history informed Beast of Reincarnation's feeling of "becoming partners through gameplay" despite looking totally different

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has an "insane secret trick" to destroy crowds of enemies, just don't use it on yourself: "THIS IS HOW I KEEP BLOWING MYSELF UP?"

There aren't any explosive grenades in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced , but a handy exploit lets you make some on the fly. Players have discovered a way to turn smoke bombs into impromptu fiery weapons to handle multiple enemies – but you really need to be careful when using it. On Twitter, Assassin's Creed fan account Zephryss posted a clip of how it works. First, you throw the smoke bomb, and let it start filling the area. Then, using your pistol, shoot a bullet right at where it landed, and you'll get a nice little explosion. "Here's an insane secret trick," they say. They include footage of them doing it a couple of times, across different areas and situations, to demonstrate how repeatable it is. In one of them, several enemies are approaching, and this tool of slight destruction takes a chunk of their health and bounces them back. Here's an insane secret trick in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.Shoot smoke bombs with your pistol to make them explode and take out multiple enemies at once. pic.twitter.com/uIkbdnTktm July 21, 2026 It's a fine addition to the toolkit of any assassin. Not very graceful, mind, but sometimes you need to just go for broke and do whatever you can to get out alive. That last part can be tricky, since many people are figuring this alternate way of using smoke bombs the hard way. "THIS. THIS IS HOW I KEEP BLOWING MYSELF UP??" says one player in response to the clip from Zephryss. "I learned this the hard way when trying to get the trophy of kicking a [berserk] enemy in smoke off a ship," another adds . "Would accidentally pull out pistols and wonder wtf happened." Now that word is getting around, there's a chance Ubisoft could patch this out if it's not intentional. I hope that doesn't happen, because this is definitely handier than it is a hurdle. But a primer on how to do it safely would help, lest more people wind up blowing Edward's face off completely by accident. If you're yet to play it yourself, you can read our Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced review to see how it compares to the best Assassin's Creed games .
